之说。其涵盖之广由原书目录可见一斑(见附录V)，除了故
事，还包括了自然地理、，风俗习惯、技艺之术、传记语录、笑
话幽默等等。《太平广记》在中国文学发展史上有着巨大的影
响，它所引用的书目，大多已经湮灭，但正是由于它的编辑成
书，保存了大量的文献，使后世的研究者能够窥其一斑，甚至
能够还原其中相当一部分。
    本书入选的主要是日臻成熟的唐代(618年-907年)小说，
同时也考虑到了选篇的覆盖面。唐朝是中国历史上*大气磅礴
的朝代。在文学上，不仅以诗流芳百世，于文亦文采飞扬。写
“小说”，亦即写故事，已不再被文人学士看作不屑，更有甚
者，小说已成为诗赋之外，用来投献给达官贵人以获得推举甚
或经济支持的手段，史称行卷、温卷。在这种风气之下，小说
成为了文学上的自觉。
    简而要之，唐代小说有三个主要来源，即史传的传统、神
话传说和讲故事。

陈义郎
  陈义郎，父彝爽，与周茂方皆东洛福昌人，同于三乡
习业。彝爽擢第，归娶郭情女。茂方名竞不就，唯与彝爽
交结相誓。
    唐天宝中，彝爽调集，受蓬州仪陇令。其母恋旧居，
不从子之官。行李有日，郭氏以自织染缣一匹，裁衣欲上
其姑。误为交刀伤指，血沾衣上。启姑日：“新妇七八年
温清晨昏，今将随夫之官，远违左右，不胜咽恋。然手自
成此衫子，上有剪刀误伤血痕，不能浣去。大家见之，即
不忘媳妇。，’其姑亦哭。彝爽固请茂方同行。其子义郎，
才二岁．茂方见之，甚于骨肉。
 The Blood-Stained Coat
     Chen Yishuang and Zhou Maofang, both natives of Fuchang
County southwest of the East Capital, Luoyang, were classmates at a
local school in the small town of Sanxiang. As it turned out, Yishuang
succeeded in the imperial examination and came home in glory to marry
a girl from the Guo family, while Maofang failed both in the exam and
in getting himself a wife. They remained good friends, however.
     In mid Tianbao reign, Yishuang was appointed to an official po-
sition as magistrate o~Yilong County in Shu. As was the custom, his
family was to follow him to his new job. His mother, however, was
reluctant to leave her birthplace and preferred to s.tay behind.
     The date for their departure was drawing near. As part of the
hectic preparations for leaving, Yishuang's wife wove and dyed a bolt
of silk to make her mother-in-law a new coat. But while she was cut-
ting out the garment, the scissors slipped and cut her finger, leaving a
blood stain on the coat.
      "Mother," she said as she presented the coat to her mother-in-
law, %ye're lived happily together for seven or eight years and I hate to
leave you alone at home, but I must go with my lord. Since I can no
longer wait on your daily needs, here's a new coat I iust made for you.
 It's a pity this blood stain can't be washed off. Anyway, it may remind
 you of me whenever you see it." She broke down in tears and her
 mother-in-law wept too.
      At Yishuang's insistence, Maofang was going with them. Maofang<
 及去仪陇五百余里，磴石临险，巴江浩渺，攀萝游
览。茂方忽生异志，命仆夫等先行，为吾邮亭具馔。二
人徐步，自牵马行，忽于山路斗拔之所，抽金锤击彝
爽，碎颡，挤之于浚湍之中。佯号哭云：“某内逼，北
回，见马惊践长官殂矣，今将何之?”一夜会丧，爽妻及
仆御致酒感恸。茂方日：“事既如此，如之何?况天下四
方人一无知者，吾便权与夫人乘名之官，且利一政俸
禄，逮可归北，即与发哀。”仆御等皆悬厚利。妻不知
本末，乃从其计。
