Brown earned master's degrees in agricultural economics from the University of Maryland and
in public administration from Harvard. In 1964, he became an adviser to Secretary of Agriculture
Orville Freeman on foreign agricultural policy. In 1974, with support of the Rockefeller Brothers
Fund, Lester Brown founded the Worldwatch Institute, the first research institute devoted to the
analysis of global environmental issues. In May 2001, he founded the Earth Policy Institute to
provide a vision and a road map for achieving an environmentally sustainable economy.
      Brown has authored or coauthored about 50 books. Among his earlier books are Man, Land and
 Food, World Without Borders, and Building a Sustainable Society. In November 2001, he published
Eco-Economy: Building an Economy for the Earth. His most recent book is Plan B 2.0: Rescuing a
Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble.
      The Washington Post (华盛顿邮报) called Lester R. Brown "one of the world's most influential
thinkers." The Telegraph of Calcutta ([印度 ]加尔各答电讯报 ) refers to him as "the guru of the
environmental movement."
      Christopher Flavin, as President of Worldwatch, is the Institute's chief executive officer, serves
on its Board of Directors, and represents the organization before a wide range of international
audiences. In his long career at Worldwatch, he has helped guide the Institute's development,
serving as vice president for research and later as senior vice president. He was appointed president
in September 2000.
      Christopher is actively engaged in international climate change and energy policy discussions,
and participated in the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the Climate Change Conference in
Kyoto Japan in 1997, and the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002.
He is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Business Council for Sustainable Energy
and a member of the National Academy of Sciences Board on Energy and Environmental Systems,
the Climate Institute, and the Environmental and Energy Study Institute.
     Sandra Postel, Worldwatch Senior Fellow and Director of the Global Water Policy Project in
Amherst, Massachusetts, has been named by scientific American magazine as one of the "Scientific
American 50," a new award recognizing contributions from the past year to science and technology.
Postel was honored for promoting "sweeping changes aimed at preserving the world's dwindling
supplies of freshwater." A prolific writer and experienced water analyst, Postel is author of the
Worldwatch Institute's publication, Pillar of Sand: Can the Irrigation Miracle Last?, which spotlights
the unsustainability of current global irrigation practices and calls for fundamental reforms in
agricultural water use.

      On April 10, 1912, the Titanic set sail from Southampton on her maiden voyage to New York.
At that time, she was the largest and most luxurious ship ever built. At 11:40 PM on that day, she
struck an iceberg about 400 miles off Newfoundland, Canada. Less than three hours later, the Titanic
plunged to the bottom of the sea, taking more than 1,500 people with her. Only a fraction of her
passengers were saved. The world was stunned to learn of the fate of the unsinkable Titanic.   (英
