长足虻科隶属于双翅目短角亚目中的舞虻总科，在系统演化上是虻类中*进化的类群。它们绝大多数是捕食性昆虫，是农作物、果树、林木及卫生害虫的天敌，对害虫起着一定的控制作用。该类群种类繁多、个体数量大、食性广、捕食能力强，是有益的天敌昆虫资源。

本书分为总论和各论两大部分，总论部分包括研究简史、分类系统、形态特征、系统发育、地理分布、生物学及经济意义。各论部分系统记述了我国长足虻科10亚科66属1026种，包括亚科、属、种检索表，插图1017幅，图版7面。书末附参考文献、英文摘要及索引。
