《鲁滨孙漂流记》讲述这样一个故事：主人公鲁滨孙出身在一个体面的商人家庭，他不安于闲适平淡的生活，一心想去海外见识一番。他瞒着父亲出海历险，**次航行就遇到大风浪，船只沉没，他好不容易才得以逃生。第二次出海到非洲经商，赚了一笔钱。第三次又遭不幸，被摩尔人俘虏，当了奴隶。后来他划主人的小船逃跑，途中被一艘葡萄牙货船所救，船到巴西后，他在那里买下一个庄园，做了庄园主。他不甘心于这样的发财致富，又一次出海，到非洲贩卖奴隶。在前往非洲的旅途中遇难，流落荒岛。他凭借勤劳的双手、坚忍不拔的毅力和善于思索的大脑，居然在杳无人烟的荒岛上生存下来。从挖洞居住、猎野味为食，度过*初的难关开始，到种植粮食，自制工具加工面粉、烘制面包，驯养山羊，采摘葡萄制作葡萄干，制作陶器满足生活需要，住上了自己建造的房子，鲁滨孙在岛上独自生活了24年，直到从吃人生番手中救下一个土人——“星期五”，后来，又救下一个西班牙人和“星期五”的父亲。*后，他搭乘一艘英国船返回英国。
《鲁滨孙漂流记》流传二百九十年，至今魅力不衰，主要原因是它表达了个人通过努力，靠自己的智慧和勇敢战胜困难的思想，并表现了当时追求冒险，倡导个人奋斗的社会风气。小说情节曲折，采用自述方式，读来饶有趣味。
