言
《伊索寓言》是世界上最古老的寓言集,它由几百个篇幅短小、形式不拘的寓言故事组成,由古希腊人伊索以及之后其他人共同编著和收集整理而成。
相传,伊索是公元前6世纪小亚细亚弗利基亚人,曾是奴隶,后来被主人恩赏,成了自由人。伊索善于讲故事,尤其擅长讲动物故事,借此影射人间的是非曲直,其中充满了生活的机智和智慧。现在我们见到的伊索寓言集是经后人整理、汇集而成的,其中多是伊索所作,但其他人和其他时期的作品,也被汇集在伊索的名下,作为古代希腊寓言的集成流传至今,成为宝贵的世界文学遗产。与其他著名寓言故事不同的是,《伊索寓言》大多是动物故事,以动物为喻,教人处世和做人的道理,出现最多的是狐狸、狮子、驴、狼、羊、鸟儿等,以及猎人和农夫。在这些故事中,为了阐释种种道理,各种动物和人扮演着善恶不同的角色。例如,狐狸有时候是聪明的;而有时候则是狡猾、轻诺、背信弃义的。借助这些活灵活现的动物的一言一行,传达出一些颇具哲理的人生观和生活观。例如,《龟兔赛跑》的寓意是人们只要后天努力学习,一样能赶上并超过天才;奋发图强的弱者终会战胜骄傲自满的强者。
《伊索寓言》是世界上对人类文明进程影响最大和最深远的寓言故事集,这些故事闪耀着智慧的光芒,蕴含着深刻的寓意。《伊索寓言》采取拟人化的手法,有的揭露权贵的愚蠢、残暴,有的总结人生的智慧、经验、教人处事的原则,形式短小精悍,比喻恰当,形象生动,于浅显生动的语言中,寓意丰富的人生哲理。《伊索寓言》对人类文化影响深远,对世界文明产生了巨大的影响,堪称人类文明史上的一座丰碑。在西方人眼中,它的重要性甚至被认为仅次于《圣经》。世界各国的文学作品甚至政治著作中,也常常引用《伊索寓言》,或作为说理论证时的比喻,或作为抨击与讽刺的武器。
随着“西学东渐”,《伊索寓言》在明朝时就已传入我国。第一个来我国的西方传教士利马窦在中国生活期间撰写了《畸人十篇》,其中便介绍过伊索,对《伊索寓言》做过称引。之后,还有其他传教士介绍和引用过《伊索寓言》。我国第一个《伊索寓言》译本是1625年刊印的《况义》。清朝之后,出现了许多种《伊索寓言》译本。即使在今天,《伊索寓言》依然是最受广大青少年读者欢迎的经典寓言故事图书之一。目前在中国出版的各类版本总计不下100种。作为世界文学宝库中的传世经典之作,它影响了一代又一代中国人的美丽童年、少年直至成年。目前,在国内数量众多的《伊索寓言》书籍中,主要的出版形式有两种:一种是中文翻译版,另一种是中英文对照版。其中的中英文对照读本比较受读者的欢迎,这主要是得益于中国人热衷于学习英文的大环境。从英文学习的角度来看,直接使用纯英文的学习资料更有利于英语学习。考虑到对英文内容背景的了解有助于英文阅读,使用中文导读应该是一种比较好的方式,也可以说是第三种版本形式。采用中文导读而非中英文对照的方式进行编排,这样有利于国内读者摆脱对英文阅读依赖中文注释的习惯。基于以上原因,我们决定编译《伊索寓言》,并采用中文导读英文版的形式出版,并选中了其中流传最广、影响最大的180个经典寓言故事。在中文导读中,我们尽力使其贴近原作的精髓,也尽可能保留原作简洁、精练、明快的风格。我们希望能够编译出为当代中国读者所喜爱的经典读本。读者在阅读英文故事之前,可以先阅读中文导读,这样有利于了解故事背景,从而加快阅读速度。同时,为了读者更好地理解故事内容,书中加入了大量插图。我们相信,该经典著作对加强当代中国读者,特别是青少年读者的人文修养是非常有帮助的。
