言
《伊索寓言》是世界上最古老的寓言集，它由几百个篇幅短小、形式不拘的寓言故事组成，由古希腊人伊索以及之后其他人共同编著和收集整理而成。
相传，伊索是公元前6世纪小亚细亚弗利基亚人，曾是奴隶，后来被主人恩赏，成了自由人。伊索善于讲故事，尤其擅长讲动物故事，借此影射人间的是非曲直，其中充满了生活的机智和智慧。现在我们见到的伊索寓言集是经后人整理、汇集而成的，其中多是伊索所作，但其他人和其他时期的作品，也被汇集在伊索的名下，作为古代希腊寓言的集成流传至今，成为宝贵的世界文学遗产。与其他著名寓言故事不同的是，《伊索寓言》大多是动物故事，以动物为喻，教人处世和做人的道理，出现最多的是狐狸、狮子、驴、狼、羊、鸟儿等，以及猎人和农夫。在这些故事中，为了阐释种种道理，各种动物和人扮演着善恶不同的角色。例如，狐狸有时候是聪明的；而有时候则是狡猾、轻诺、背信弃义的。借助这些活灵活现的动物的一言一行，传达出一些颇具哲理的人生观和生活观。例如，《龟兔赛跑》的寓意是人们只要后天努力学习，一样能赶上并超过天才；奋发图强的弱者终会战胜骄傲自满的强者。
《伊索寓言》是世界上对人类文明进程影响最大和最深远的寓言故事集，这些故事闪耀着智慧的光芒，蕴含着深刻的寓意。《伊索寓言》采取拟人化的手法，有的揭露权贵的愚蠢、残暴，有的总结人生的智慧、经验、教人处事的原则，形式短小精悍，比喻恰当，形象生动，于浅显生动的语言中，寓意丰富的人生哲理。《伊索寓言》对人类文化影响深远，对世界文明产生了巨大的影响，堪称人类文明史上的一座丰碑。在西方人眼中，它的重要性甚至被认为仅次于《圣经》。世界各国的文学作品甚至政治著作中，也常常引用《伊索寓言》，或作为说理论证时的比喻，或作为抨击与讽刺的武器。
随着“西学东渐”，《伊索寓言》在明朝时就已传入我国。第一个来我国的西方传教士利马窦在中国生活期间撰写了《畸人十篇》，其中便介绍过伊索，对《伊索寓言》做过称引。之后，还有其他传教士介绍和引用过《伊索寓言》。我国第一个《伊索寓言》译本是1625年刊印的《况义》。清朝之后，出现了许多种《伊索寓言》译本。即使在今天，《伊索寓言》依然是最受广大青少年读者欢迎的经典寓言故事图书之一。目前在中国出版的各类版本总计不下100种。作为世界文学宝库中的传世经典之作，它影响了一代又一代中国人的美丽童年、少年直至成年。目前，在国内数量众多的《伊索寓言》书籍中，主要的出版形式有两种：一种是中文翻译版，另一种是中英文对照版。其中的中英文对照读本比较受读者的欢迎，这主要是得益于中国人热衷于学习英文的大环境。从英文学习的角度来看，直接使用纯英文的学习资料更有利于英语学习。考虑到对英文内容背景的了解有助于英文阅读，使用中文导读应该是一种比较好的方式，也可以说是第三种版本形式。采用中文导读而非中英文对照的方式进行编排，这样有利于国内读者摆脱对英文阅读依赖中文注释的习惯。基于以上原因，我们决定编译《伊索寓言》，并采用中文导读英文版的形式出版，并选中了其中流传最广、影响最大的180个经典寓言故事。在中文导读中，我们尽力使其贴近原作的精髓，也尽可能保留原作简洁、精练、明快的风格。我们希望能够编译出为当代中国读者所喜爱的经典读本。读者在阅读英文故事之前，可以先阅读中文导读，这样有利于了解故事背景，从而加快阅读速度。同时，为了读者更好地理解故事内容，书中加入了大量插图。我们相信，该经典著作对加强当代中国读者，特别是青少年读者的人文修养是非常有帮助的。
