Steinbeck’s novels can all be classified as social novels dealing with the economic problems of rural labour, but there is also a streak of worship of the soil in his books. After the rough and earthy humor of Tortilla Flat, he moved on to more serious fiction, often aggressive in its social criticism. In 1936 In Dubious Battle was published. This was followed by Of Mice and Men, and a series of admirable short stories collected in The Long Valley. In 1939 he published what is considered his best work, The Grapes of Wrath. Among his later works should be mentioned East of Eden, The Winter of Our Discontent, and Travels with Charley.
John Steinbeck was awarded The Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962, “for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception.”

约翰·斯坦贝克（1902-1968）美国小说家。出生于加利福尼亚州蒙特雷县塞利纳斯镇一个面粉厂主家庭。在母亲的熏陶下，很早就接触欧洲文学。大学期间开始写作，1929年发表第一部长篇小说《金杯》，后陆续发表了两部小说《天堂的牧场》和《献给一位无名的神》，却未引起重视。1935年《托蒂亚平地》出版，立即广受好评，此后又发表了《胜负未决的战斗》、《鼠与人》、《长谷》等。《愤怒的葡萄》是斯坦贝克的代表作，于1940年获普利策文学奖。
